Pakistan's inclusion of Azam Khan in their T20 World Cup 2024 squad has been a subject of debate, with critics questioning his place in the team. The spotlight intensified during Pakistan's opening match against the USA at Grand Prairie Stadium on June 6, where Khan's performance fell short of expectations.

The match saw Pakistan, led by Babar Azam, struggling right from the powerplay. Azam Khan was called to bat at number six following the departure of Shadab Khan, who had contributed a quickfire 40 runs off 25 balls.

Azam Khan's stay at the crease was remarkably brief. He faced just one delivery and was dismissed for a golden duck.

The critical moment occurred in the 13th over when USA's Nosthush Kenjige bowled a well-pitched arm ball that turned the tide against Pakistan. The ball, pitching close to the off stump, zipped back in, catching Azam off guard.

His footwork failed him, and as he attempted to play the ball to the leg side, it struck above the knee roll of his front pad.

The USA side's loud appeal was quickly upheld by umpire Michael Gough, who raised his finger without hesitation.

Azam opted for a review, but the decision remained unchanged as the DRS showed the ball hitting the stumps, leading to an umpire’s call on the wickets. Consequently, Azam had to walk back to the pavilion, registering a golden duck.

At the time of writing, Pakistan's score stood at 113 for 5 after 15 overs.
