Islamabad United squandered away their sublime 15-over start against Quetta Gladiators bowlers in their all-important PSL 2024 Eliminator 1 faceoff. Despite racing to 131-2 in just 15 overs, the United batters managed to list just 174-9 after captain Shadab Khan had won the toss and opted to bat first.

Following Shadab’s dismissal at 131-3, opener Martin Guptill and wicketkeeper Azam Khan shared 24 runs off the subsequent two overs to take their team past the 150-run mark. However, Khan’s dismissal at the hands of Quetta Gladiators spinner Akeal Hosein a while later dented United’s run-scoring impetus at a crucial stage of their innings.

Azam Khan’s dismissal initiate United collapse

Islamabad United blazed past the 150-run mark inside 17 overs off the back of Martin Guptill’s imperial half-century and valiant middle-overs contributions from Alex Hales, Agha Salman and captain Shadab Khan.

Azam Khan also helped United’s run-scoring cause by bludgeoning a couple of sixes and a boundary during his six-ball stay at the crease.

However, Azam Khan’s dismissal at the hands of Quetta Gladiators spinner Akeal Hosein at the end of the 17th over of the innings shattered Islamabad United’s middle-order as they lost a slew of wickets at the death.

Islamabad United eventually dragged themselves to 174-9 by the completion of their innings, thus managing to add just 43 runs to their total off the final five overs.

Quetta Gladiators, meanwhile, were jolted early in their response by United’s new-ball attack, with spinner Imad Wasim striking thrice within his opening spell. Fast bowler Naseem Shah also squared up Jason Roy with a peach as the Gladiators were reduced to 16-5 at one stage of the innings.
