Nicholas Pooran cracked 61 runs from just 27 deliveries against Delhi Capitals in match number 64 of the ongoing IPL 2024 season. Turning up for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Delhi, the dynamic left-hander clobbered six boundaries and four sixes to single-handedly keep an improbable run-chase alive for his side.

It eventually took some smart fielding on Axar Patel’s part to account for his departure, as the Delhi Capitals all-rounder seized a dipping ball at extra cover to hand Mukesh Kumar his first wicket of the evening.

Chasing a humongous 209 for a win in a must-win game for the LSG, Nicholas Pooran arrived to the crease in just the fourth over of the innings at a precarious 24-3. With the early dismissals of KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock and Marcus Stoinis all within the opening powerplay, Pooran rectified LSG’s top-order errors by taking the attack to the Delhi Capitals bowlers.

The dynamic left-hander smacked a boundary-filled 61 from just 27 balls despite constantly losing partners at the other end. He also ensured that LSG soared past the 100-run mark inside the 11th over of the innings. Just as Pooran’s run-chase resistance was beginning to herald some hope for LSG, the cricketer was holed out by Axar Patel at extra cover off Mukesh Kumar’s bowling.

His dismissal extinguished all rising hopes for the visitors as they slipped to 101-6 in 11.1 overs. Notably, Nicholas Pooran amounted to 61 of the total 77 runs scored by the LSG during his stay at the crease.

Earlier in the match, the Delhi Capitals formed 208-4 after they were put into bat first by LSG captain KL Rahul. Abhishek Porel top-scored in the innings with a sizzling 33-ball 58 while Tristan Stubbs bashed 57* from just 25 balls. Shai Hope and skipper Rishabh Pant also scored valiant 30s in the middle overs.
