Angelo Mathews has been an enigma over the years! He started of his career with a bang and was touted as the next big thing in Sri Lankan cricket. However, the injuries started haunting him after 2015 and since then the man who promised so much, has been in and out of the Lankan team mainly because of string of injuries. His ability though has never been in doubt and he has found himself back in the Sri Lankan World Cup squad yet again after an injury to their star bowler Matheesha Pathirana.

Mathews has been slotted into the XI against England straightaway and has made an impact as well with the ball, in just his third delivery, getting rid of in-form Dawid Malan.

Mathews was introduced into the attack in the 7th over after England started off brilliantly with 44 runs in the first six overs. The opening partnership was looking dangerous, especially Malan but Mathews bowled a lovely good-length delivery on the off-stump line, taking the ball across the left-hander. Malan tried to defend it but got a fine outside edge which was easily taken by Kusal Mendis behind the stumps.

However, the umpire denied the appeal and Kusal Mendis immediately took the DRS. The replays showed that Malan got the edge on it and Sri Lanka and Mathews were rewarded with their first wicket of the game.
