India's prominent batter Ajinkya Rahane missed out on a well-deserved century, as he was dismissed for 98 runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) semifinal between Mumbai and Baroda. Opening the batting for Mumbai, Rahane struck a blazing knock before Abhimanyusingh Rajput made him the victim of nervous nineties.

The incident occurred during the 17th over of Mumbai's innings when they were already on the brink of a massive victory, thanks to Rahane's breathtaking knock. The veteran batter started the over in a fabulous fashion, dispatching the right-arm pacer to the fence on his first and third deliveries.

However, with Mumbai needing one run to win, Rahane attempted a glory shot to complete his ton and ensure his team's victory.

The decision backfired on the batting maestro, as he miscued the lofted shot and got caught by Baroda's wicketkeeper Vishnu Solanki. Before getting out, the Mumbaikar hammered eleven boundaries and five sixes for his glorious 56-ball 98.

Mumbai Crush Baroda To Enter SMAT 2024 Final

However, Rahane's valiant effort didn't go in vain, as Mumbai thrashed Baroda by six wickets to enter the final of Syed Mushtaq Ali competition. Earlier, batting first, Baroda posted a respectable 158-run total, riding on useful knocks from Krunal Pandya, Shivalik Sharma and Atit Sheth. However, despite losing Prithvi Shaw cheaply, Mumbai made a mockery of the target, completing the run-chase inside 18 overs.
