Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane, stationed at short cover, ran out his Baroda counterpart Krunal Pandya with a sensational throw in their latest Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2023 quarter-final match in Mullanpur.

Ajinkya Rahana gets Pandya with fielding brilliance

Mumbai faced Baroda in the third quarterfinal of the ongoing SMAT 2023 season in Mullanpur on October 2. Defending 149 runs to secure a place in the semifinals, Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane dismissed Baroda captain Krunal Pandya against the run-of-play with a sensational throw while fielding at short cover.

Rahane’s moment of brilliance occurred during the 12th over of the Baroda innings, when wicketkeeper Vishnu Solanki attempted to steal a quick single. Pandya, who was at the other end of the crease, failed to make his ground despite his sliding effort owing to Rahane’s accurate throw from inside the ring.

Despite Ajinkya Rahane’s fielding brilliance, Mumbai failed to stop Baroda from chasing down 149 runs with more than an over to spare. Solanki himself top-scored in the run-chase with an unbeaten 49 from just 30 balls.

Earlier in the match, Rahane scored just 13 runs during Mumbai's innings before becoming one of Soyeb Sopariya’s three victims of the morning. His short stay at the crease preserved his silent run with the bat throughout the tournament. Apart from the 76* he scored against Haryana; Rahane has not managed to register another 50-plus score in any of his subsequent six innings for Mumbai.
