In a remarkable achievement, veteran Indian batter Virat Kohli has overtaken the legendary Sachin Tendulkar to attain a phenomenal milestone.

Notably, the stylish right-handed batter has become the fastest batter to amass 8000 ODI runs in Asian continent. The talisman took only 159 innings to garner 8000 runs in the 50-over format in Asia and thus achieved this feat during India's ongoing World Cup clash against Sri Lanka in Mumbai.

Kohli is the only fourth batter after Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara to score 8000 ODI runs on Asian soil.

Most ODI runs in Asia

  • Sachin Tendulkar: 12067 runs in 281 innings
  • Sanath Jayasuriya: 8448 runs in 268 innings
  • Kumar Sangakkara: 8249 runs in 216 innings
  • Virat Kohli: 8020* runs in 159 innings
  • Mahela Jayawardene: 7342 runs in 235 innings

After winning the toss, Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis opted to bowl first in the all-important clash in Mumbai. His decision proved to be a masterstroke, as Dilshan Madushanka castled Indian skipper Rohit Sharma with a beautiful delivery in the very first over.

However, Kohli and Shubman Gill gradually upped the ante, stabilising the Indian innings. As of writing, India are 87 for one in 14.2 overs, with Kohli and Gill batting on 40* and 35*, respectively.
