The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) witnessed a spectacular moment of athleticism at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on January 26. In a stunning surprise, Fortune Barishal’s seasoned campaigner, Mahmudullah Riyad, pulled off a breathtaking catch.

The 38-year-old Mahmudullah Riyad showed age is just a number as he took a sensational diving catch in the deep to send Kadeem Alleyne back for a duck. The veteran all-rounder covered significant ground from mid-off before launching himself full stretch to complete the catch over his shoulders,  proving the fact that Mahmudullah's reflexes and agility remains top-notch despite his years of experience.

The spectacular effort occurred in the sixth over of Sylhet Strikers' innings when Faheem Ashraf delivered a length ball outside off stump. Alleyne attempted an aggressive shot but mistimed it, sending the ball high into the air toward extra cover.

Mahmudullah sprinted from mid-off and dived full length in a blind attempt, grabbing the ball mid-air to complete a gravity-defying blinder.

The stunning effort was crucial in piling pressure on Sylhet, as Barishal claimed two wickets in three deliveries. Alleyne’s innings ended before it even began, as he departed for a silver duck without troubling the scorers.

Alleyne's dismissal was part of a sensational bowling spell from Pakistani all-rounder Faheem Ashraf, who delivered a match-winning performance for Barishal. Ashraf’s fiery spell saw him claim a five-wicket haul, conceding only seven runs in 3.1 overs, dismantling Sylhet’s batting lineup.

Fortune Barishal Secure Comfortable Victory

Earlier in the match, Sylhet Strikers opted to bat first after winning the toss. However, their decision backfired as they struggled throughout the innings and were bundled out for a modest 116 in 18.1 overs. Ahsan Bhatti was the top scorer for Sylhet with 28 off 29 balls, but the rest of the lineup failed to provide any resistance.

Ashraf was the standout performer for Barishal, picking up five wickets and rattling Sylhet’s batting order. His spell was well-supported by Mohammad Nabi and James Fuller, who took two wickets each. Chasing 117, Fortune Barishal faced early setbacks, losing Towhid Hridoy (6 off 7) and Dawid Malan (9 off 8) inside the powerplay.

However, veteran batters Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim steadied the innings with an unbeaten 81-run partnership. Tamim played a captain’s knock, remaining unbeaten on 52 off 51 balls, while Mushfiqur added a quick 42* off 30 deliveries.
