Sri Lanka rising star spinner Maheesh Theekshana made headlines with a brilliant hat-trick in the second ODI against New Zealand at Seddon Park, Hamilton. His incredible performance helped Sri Lanka restrict New Zealand to 255/9 in a rain-shortened match.

Theekshana wreaked havoc on the Kiwi batting lineup, starting his demolition job in the 35th over of New Zealand's innings. He struck with a perfect delivery to dismiss Mitchell Santner for 20 runs. The ball was pitched at a good length outside the off-stump, and Santner's attempt to hit it over cover proved costly. Chamindu Wickramasinghe at sweeper cover made a spectacular diving catch, barely inches off the ground.

On the very next ball, Theekshana claimed Nathan Smith's wicket. It was a well-directed delivery that forced Smith to play a risky shot, only to find Kusal Mendis at deep cover, who took a safe catch to send him back to the pavilion.

The Hat-Trick Moment

The most exciting moment came in the 37th over when Theekshana completed his hat-trick. Matt Henry was the unfortunate third victim. Theekshana bowled a deceptive full-length delivery outside off-stump. Henry attempted a powerful drive but misread the carrom ball. Nuwanidu Fernando, positioned at long-off, ran in and took a diving catch to seal the hat-trick for Theekshana.

The match was originally scheduled to be a full 50-over game. However, rain delayed the start, reducing it to a 37-over-per-side contest. With overcast conditions favoring the bowlers, Sri Lanka’s captain Charith Asalanka decided to bowl first after winning the toss.
