Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi is hopeful of a better future for his team, despite suffering a huge defeat in their opening match of the T20 World Cup.

Batting first, they were shot out by the English speedsters for just 112 on the board. Sam Curran claimed a remarkable five-for, with the remaining wickets shared by Ben Stokes, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes.

After the match, Afghanistan skipper Mohammad Nabi said his team fell short of a competitive total. The all-rounder said they were looking to reach around 145 before Curran's five-for triggered a monumental collapse in the death overs.

Nabi also expressed his confidence in better performances in the upcoming matches of the tournament. However, the senior cricketer added that he would be banking on his prime spinners Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, considering both of them have BBL experience on Australian conditions.

"Good start to the tournament... We didn't put up a good score. [There were] two or three good catches; we thought 145 would be a good total to fight. This is our plan: put a good total on the board. We have good spinners - me, Rashid and Mujeeb - who play the Big Bash here. We'll learn and we hope we improve in the next game."
