The widely celebrated, two-time world champions West Indies humiliatingly exited the T20 World Cup after their loss to Ireland in the World Cup qualifiers. Former Australian captain Ricky Pointing has shined light on the Windies situation.

West Indies lost the opening match to Scotland, then clinched a win against Zimbabwe but all hopes were shattered in the qualifiers last match as they lost to Ireland.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) President Ricky Skerritt largely placed the blame on the batters, stating that they failed to put up enough on the scoreboard. The Windies management was also questioned after two star player Shimron Hetmyer and Andre Russell were left out of the squad over petty reasons.

What Ponting said

"It's a disgrace."

"It's so bad for their cricket. They've got too much talent in that team."

"And even one of their main players not making it to the flight to get over here for a World Cup... To me this sort of sums up probably how little these events mean to the West Indies players and if you look at the way that they played you'd say the same thing. [Nicholas] Pooran and these guys, they're much better players than what we've seen over the last couple of weeks so no doubt there'll be some soul-searching done when they get back.

West Indies future ventures

The team will return to Australia in November for a two-match Test series, they last played a Test match in Australia in 2015 and haven't won a match against Australia since 1997. Ponting has also expressed his concern over how competitive the upcoming Test matches will be, considering how the Windies squad is in a poor condition compared to their Australian counterparts.
