Team India overcame Australia in a high-scoring thriller in Hobart to bring the five-match T20I series to levelling terms after the third game. Surprise package Washington Sundar hogged the limelight in the run-chase after Arshdeep Singh excelled with the new ball in his comeback match.
Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of the third T20I of the five-match series between Australia and India, as it panned out at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Sunday, November 2.
Tim David and Marcus Stoinis fire Australia to 186
For once, Team India won the toss, and opted to field first. Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh complemented his captain Suryakumar Yadav’s toss call by getting rid of Travis Head and Josh Inglis inside the first three overs of the match. Tim David at number three, however, smeared 74 runs from 38 balls with eight cracking boundaries and five huge sixes to lead Australia’s counterattack.
Between his expensive overs, ace spinner Varun Chakravarthy (2-33) dismissed Mitchell Marsh and Mitchell Owen off successive deliveries before senior man Marcus Stoinis joined David to turn the assault into a full-blown onslaught. After David, Stoinis also notched up a 32-ball half-century, and scored 64 runs in all from 39 balls with eight fours and two sixes.
Jasprit Bumrah delivered a tight penultimate over while Arshdeep Singh got his third at the end to claim figures of 3-35 as Australia reached a monumental 186-6 in 20 overs.
Washington Sundar surprises Australia in stunning run-chase
Chasing 187, India lost both openers, Abhishek Sharma (25 off 16) and Shubman Gill (15 off 12) inside the powerplay to Nathan Ellis. Captain Suryakumar Yadav (24 off 11) and Tilak Varma (29 off 26) kept afloat with India’s tall asking rate by unleashing swift 20s each from their ends. Shortly after Axar Patel became Nathan Ellis’ third victim of the innings, Indian number six Washington Sundar took over the run-scoring onus from Suryakumar.
Sundar smeared 49 unbeaten runs from just 23 balls with three fours and four huge sixes, and crafted a 43*-run stand with Jitesh Sharma (22* off 13) to take India past the finish line with five wickets and nine balls to spare.
