Pakistan’s hopes of avoiding the follow-on in the ongoing second Test against South Africa at Newlands Stadium took a significant blow. Pakistan's poor batting performance led to their first innings collapse for just 194/9, leaving them trailing by 421 runs.
Talking about Day 3 so far, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, began the day, feel in quick succession and this led to Pakistan's collapse. Both the players departed without adding much to their overnight scores.
The quick dismissals of both senior players triggered a collapse and the middle-order flattered under pressure.
Quick Recap Of Pakistan's First Innings
Earlier on Day 2, Pakistan's first innings got off to a disastrous start with captain Shan Masood falling to Rabada in the very first over. Saudi Shakeel, who had shown promise earlier, was dismissed for a duck, further compounding Pakistan’s woes.
From a precarious 64/3 at the start of the day, Pakistan were left with little to show for their efforts, as wickets fell rapidly in the morning session. The final blow came when debutant Kwena Maphaka cleaned up the tail, dismissing Khurram Shahzad to end the innings. The visitors now face the daunting prospect of being forced to follow-on.
It is also worth mentioning that Pakistan ended their innings after nine wickets and returned to the dugout and the reason for this Saim Ayub's injury.
Earlier in the match, the South African batters had piled on the runs with Ryan Rickelton playing the innings of a lifetime, scoring a sensational 259 runs. His knock, supported by a brilliant 100 from Kyle Verreynne, took South Africa to an imposing total.
At the time of writing, Pakistan have started playing their second innings with Shan Masood and Babar Azam on the crease.
