Day 1 of the second unofficial Test between India A and Australia A started on a positive note for the baggy greens. After winning the toss, India A chose to bowl first, sending the Australia A openers to the crease.
Australia A initially struggled to build a competitive total before losing early wickets. However, crucial contributions from the middle and lower order boosted their score to 350 for 9 at the end of 84 overs, as play was stopped due to bad light.
Konstas & co. in decent position after Day 1
Opening the innings after losing the toss, Sam Konstas played a gritty knock of 49 runs from 91 balls. His partner, Campbell Kellaway, failed to last long as he was dismissed in the 4th over by Prasidh Krishna. Captain Nathan McSweeney then came in at one down to steady the innings after the early setback.
Nathan played a composed knock of 74 runs off 162 balls, setting the tone for what followed. Cooper Connolly, a notable name in the Australia A squad, failed to impress and was sent back for a duck by Manav Suthar.
After wickets tumbled in the 31st, 45th, and 47th overs, Australia A were struggling at 202/5. However, a counter-attacking knock from Jack Edwards, who scored 88 runs off just 78 balls, revived the innings and helped push the total past 300. At stumps, Todd Murphy and Henry Thornton were unbeaten at the crease, looking to stretch the total further on Day 2.
How did Siraj, Krishna perform?
Among India’s bowlers, big names like Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Nitish Kumar Reddy disappointed with the ball. Left-arm orthodox spinner Manav Suthar, however, stood out with a five-wicket haul from 28 overs at an economy of 3.32.
Siraj bowled 13 overs for 73 runs, managing just one wicket, that of Sam Konstas. Prasidh Krishna also bagged a single wicket, dismissing Kellaway while conceding 63 runs. Gurnoor Brar emerged as the second-best performer for India with 2 wickets from his 13 overs.
With the match evenly poised, Australia A will aim to cross the 400-run mark on Day 2 as Murphy and Thornton continue their last-wicket partnership.
