Shreyas Iyer (Source:@thefield_in,x.com)
In a significant development, Shreyas Iyer has opted out of the second unofficial Test between India A and Australia A, which starts Tuesday in Lucknow. According to a report from the Times of India, Iyer has returned to Mumbai and informed selectors of his unavailability.
It is important to note that no official replacement has been named for the squad. In his absence, Dhruv Jurel, will lead the side.
“Yes, Shreyas is taking a break and has returned to Mumbai. He has informed the selectors that he won’t be able to play in the second four-day match against Australia A. However, he remains in fray for a spot in the middle-order when the selectors meet to pick the squad for the West Indies series,” a source close to the development told TOI.
Shreyas Iyer's Recent Form Raises Eyebrows
In the first unofficial Test, Shreyas Iyer just managed 8 runs off 13 balls in India A’s only innings. His recent domestic outings for West Zone in the Duleep Trophy semi-final were also underwhelming. However, selectors are expected to factor in his consistent performances in last season’s Ranji Trophy and his solid campaign in the Champions Trophy earlier this year.
Despite his exit from the second match, Iyer is believed to be a strong contender for the Indian Test squad for the upcoming West Indies series, starting October 2.
Siraj In, Nitish Still Out
In other team developments, Mohammed Siraj will join and replace left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed. However, Nitish Kumar Reddy is yet to fully recover from his injury and will miss the second fixture as well. It is also important to mention that KL Rahul is likely to be included in the squad as well.
