In a controversial incident, Indian captain Shubman Gill had a heated argument with the on-field umpires in the ongoing Test against England. The moment caught the attention of the cricketing community amid the intriguing face-off between two formidable teams at the home of cricket.
Shubman Gill's Argument With On-Field Umpire: As It Happened
India had a great start to the second day of the Lord's Test, as Jasprit Bumrah's lethal spell gave him an early advantage in the morning session. After castling Ben Stokes with a ripper, Bumrah got rid of Joe Root and Chris Woakes in quick succession, leaving England in disarray.
However, as the ball got softer, the English batters successfully neutralised the Indian pacers. Despite their disciplined bowling effort, the Indian bowlers were quite unhappy with the condition of the Duke's ball, which went out of shape in real quick time.
With the Lord's pitch offering less pace and bounce than Headingley and Edgbaston, the ball had little impact on England's unbeaten batting pair of Brydon Carse and Jamie Smith.
The condition of the ball forced Indian captain Shubman Gill to approach the on-field umpires and demand a change. Although the umpires altered it, India were further demoralised as they got a slightly older ball.
Gill was clearly unsatisfied with the ball, as he argued with the on-field umpires, openly expressing his frustration through animated gestures.
Why Could ICC Punish Shubman Gill?
Shubman Gill could find himself in serious trouble following his verbal altercation with the match officials. The Indian captain can be found guilty of violating Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct as he showed dissent at the umpire's decision during the match.
As per ICC, arguing or entering into a prolonged discussion with the Umpire about his/her decision is a punishable offence. Thus, it won't be surprising if the cricketing body sanctions Shubman Gill for his on-field conduct.
