A fresh wave of speculation has hit Indian cricket after reports suggested that Shubman Gill might soon replace Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain. The buzz began after a report claimed that Gill is likely to lead India at the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa and could take over the captaincy in the near future.

This report, along with a viral post by a leading journalist on X (formerly Twitter), has sparked a huge debate among fans and experts across social media platforms.

Report Claim Shubman Gill Will Lead India in ODIs

According to the Sports Tak report as quoted by News18, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning for the future and wants to begin the leadership transition soon. The report states that Gill may lead India in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia in October 2025, making it his first series as full-time ODI captain.

While nothing has been officially confirmed yet, this has intensified discussions about Rohit Sharma’s future with the team.

Rohit Sharma’s form in Test cricket had been on the decline for some time. After a disappointing tour of Australia, he stepped down from captaincy during the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in December 2024.

He eventually announced his retirement from Test cricket ahead of the England series in 2025. However, Rohit had made it clear that he intended to continue playing ODIs and was aiming to lead India in the 2027 World Cup.

Under his leadership, India won the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, cementing his legacy as one of India’s most successful white-ball captains.

Shubman Gill’s Meteoric Rise As A Leader

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has quickly risen through the ranks and recently impressed everyone with his performance as Test captain during the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England.

He has already scored over 500 runs in the series, including a double century, and has shown great maturity in his captaincy. His success in Tests and his consistent ODI record have made him a strong contender for the role.

While some fans believe it’s the right time to hand over the reins to a younger leader, others argue that removing Rohit now could be premature, especially with the World Cup still two years away.
