On Friday, India will cross swords against South Africa in the first Test of the upcoming two-match series on home soil. India recently enjoyed stellar success, defeating the West Indies convincingly in their backyard. Under Shubman Gill's leadership, the hosts would like to put up a similar performance against an in-form Proteas outfit, which recently secured a fighting draw in Pakistan.

Skipper Shubman Gill has showcased remarkable form this year and is expected to play a pivotal role for the home side in the South Africa Tests. As the stylish right-hander aims to sustain his purple patch, here are three major batting feats that he can achieve in the series.

1000 Test runs in a calendar year

Shubman Gill has been prolific in Test cricket this year, slamming 979 runs in just 15 innings at a magnificent average of 69.93. He is only 21 runs away from joining the talismanic Indian batters who have scored 1000 Test runs in a calendar year in the past.

It's worth mentioning that Sunil Gavaskar (1310 runs in 1983, 1407 runs in 1979), Sachin Tendulkar (1392 runs in 2002, 1562 runs in 2010), Rahul Dravid (1357 runs in 2002), Virat Kohli (1215 runs in 2016, 1322 runs in 2018), Gundappa Vishwanath (1388 runs in 1979), Virender Sehwag (1462 runs in 2008, 1422 runs in 2010) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (1478 runs in 2024) are some of the renowned Indian players who have done it in the past.

Most hundreds for India at home: Gill on the verge of joining Dhoni and Ganguly

Shubman Gill has been an incredible performer for India on home soil, accumulating 3089 runs at an average of 51.48. He has smashed eleven hundreds in India across formats and has a certain chance to join the decorated duo of MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly, who have twelve centuries under their belt on home soil.

Most Test hundreds by IND captains: Gill could go past Dhoni, Ganguly and equal Tendulkar

Shubman Gill has thrived under his own captaincy. He has already raced to five Test tons as Indian captain, equalling MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly. So, if Gill slams one hundred in the South Africa Tests, he will eclipse these two players on the elite list.

Meanwhile, if Gill manages two tons against the Proteas, he will equal Sachin Tendulkar's tally of seven Test tons as the Indian captain.
