Despite a stellar run in the recently concluded Women’s World Cup, Australia’s campaign ended in heartbreak with a semifinal loss to India. After the defeat, the Australian captain, Alyssa Healy, hinted that it was her last possible World Cup.

Standing on that crucial point, Meg Lanning backed Phoebe Litchfield as the next Australian skipper. In a recent interaction, Litchfield warmly responded, saying she would love to embrace the leadership role if given the chance.

Phoebe Litchfield stands ready to lead with confidence

After Alyssa Healy took the captaincy role of the Australian Women, the nation held their head high with unreal success, but the recent edition of the Women’s World Cup flipped the story. As they started their campaign with sheer domination, the heartbreaking defeat in the semifinal dashed their hope of another World Cup trophy. After the exit, the buzz went over the next Australian captain.

As the major shake-up has a long time, former Aussie skipper Meg Lanning named 21-year-old star Phoebe Litchfield as the next captain of the side. In a conversation with the ICC Review, Litchfield expressed her excitement, saying she would be honored to lead and represent her nation.

“I look at our group, and we've got so many natural leaders, I just learn off them. And if the day came, I'd definitely grab it with both hands,” she said.

“But I can assure you that the likes of Ash Gardner, Sophie Molineux, Annabel Sutherland, Tahlia McGrath, we've got just an amazing group of beautiful leaders, and I just look up to them. So if I end up getting it (one day), it's because of them,” she added.

Australia prepare to settle scores with the Women in Blue

After the Women in Blue shattered Australia’s dreams of another World Cup title, the Aussies are now hungry for revenge. In the next year, the Australian side is set to host them in a thrilling white-ball series, and Litchfield is looking forward to a great contest.

“I think that multi-format series will be very heated with the memories of the World Cup in the back of our minds. We're eager to get one back on them, and we've had some really good form in all formats. The multi-format series are awesome for women's cricket, and it's a really cool way to see who's the best nation,” she added.

After wrapping up the Women’s World Cup 2025, the Aussie Women’s are busy in the ongoing Women’s Big Bash League. After that, they will play their next international clash against India Women in February 2026.
