On a day fraught with dramatic twists and turns, Indian opener, Shubman Gill, stood tall and became the first batter to clock 1000 ODI runs in 2023 during the Super Fours face-off in the Asia Cup 2023 against Bangladesh at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Gill's stellar century pushes him past 1000 ODI runs in 2023

Having reached this feat in just his 17th innings, Gill has scored his runs at an impressive average of over 70 and a strike rate north of 100. He is followed by UAE's Asif Khan (934 runs), Sri Lanka's Pathum Nissanka (817), UAE's Vrittya Aravind (792), UAE’s Muhammad Waseem (782), and Pakistan skipper Babar Azam (745).

Coming to the game, while the Indian innings stuttered with wickets tumbling at regular intervals, Gill has been the anchor for the team. He also brought up a scintillating century and has kept India in the game.

India's innings took a jolting start with the departure of captain Rohit Sharma for a duck, and the curtain fell swiftly for debutant Tilak Varma, who managed only 5. At a tense 17/2 in just three overs, the team was on the back foot.

Yet, Gill, combining forces with KL Rahul, stitched a crucial 57-run partnership before Rahul's unfortunate exit at 19. The Indian innings hit another roadblock, slipping to a concerning 94/4 with Ishan Kishan's dismissal for 5.

Contributions came from Suryakumar Yadav, who chipped in a quick 26 but was outfoxed by the wily Shakib Al Hasan. Ravindra Jadeja's innings was short-lived, halted by Mustafizur Rahman for just 7.

Meanwhile, at the time of writing this article, with India at a gripping 183/6 after 39 overs, the stadium is buzzing with anticipation and all eyes are on Gill with hopes pinned on his shoulders.
