The SuperSport Park witnessed an exhilarating display of power-hitting on Friday as South Africa locked horns with Australia in the fourth ODI of their five-match series.

South Africa shattered ODI records galore at Centurion

While the Proteas posted a mammoth total of 416/5, it was their explosive finish, particularly the record-shattering batting by Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller, that stole the spotlight.

South Africa’s innings began cautiously, with the home side putting up a modest 120 runs in the first 25 overs. This slow start, however, was quickly overshadowed by the blitz that followed. The Proteas accelerated, smashing a staggering 296 runs in the subsequent 25 overs.

At the heart of this astounding batting were Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller. Together, they amassed a jaw-dropping 173 runs in the concluding 10 overs of the innings, etching their names in history. This feat eclipsed the previous record held by England, who had scored 164 runs in the final 10 overs against the Netherlands – a match that had set the highest ODI total ever at 498.

This isn't the first time South African batsmen have dominated the death overs. The team had previously added 163 runs in the dying overs against West Indies in 2015 at Johannesburg. A game fondly remembered for AB de Villiers’ fastest-ever international century, coming off just 31 balls. England's 154 against West Indies in 2019 and New Zealand’s 153 against the same opponent in 2015 round off the top five slots in this record.

Moreover, the pair of Klaasen and Miller also achieved the fastest double-century partnership in ODI history. They stitched together 222 runs in a mere 94 balls, enthralling fans and pundits alike. Klaasen’s 174 off 83 balls, which comprised 13 boundaries and an equal number of maximums, was perfectly complemented by Miller's fiery 45-ball 82.
