It was another high-class batting performance from the hosts India in the World Cup 2023, this time against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where they mustered a mammoth total of 357 with three wonderful innings from Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer.

High-class innings from all three of them gave India a solid platform to defend the total and earn two crucial points in the mega-event. Meanwhile, middle-order batter Iyer, who played a fine 82-run knock coming in at four, smashed three fours and six sixes and along the way, achieved another milestone.

The right-hander completed his 2000 ODI runs in this game and recorded this landmark in just 49 matches, making him the third fastest on the list, bettered by just Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan, who took 38 & 48 matches, respectively.

Fewest innings taken to reach 2000 ODI runs for India:

  • 38 - Shubman Gill
  • 48 - Shikhar Dhawan
  • 49 - Shreyas Iyer
  • 52 - Navjot Sidhu

Being an outstanding performer for the last few years, Iyer has been in and out of the squad due to injuries, but whenever he is in the side, there are performances of him to speak for. Even in this game, his inning was extremely crucial in the context of the game, as he gave the side a massive push at the back end of the innings.

Talking about Gill and Kohli, both batted fantastically for an 189-run partnership, scoring 92 and 88, respectively, ensuring that the runs kept flowing.
