Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper and experienced opening batter Shikhar Dhawan achieved a special landmark with the bat during his team's campaign beginner clash of IPL 2024 against the Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday (March 23).

The veteran left-hander and journeyman IPL cricketer, who has been a constant in the league since its inception in 2008, became the first batter in the tournament's history to achieve 900 boundaries scored. Despite carrying no reputation of a six-hitting machine, the limited-overs giant bagged the special landmark.

Having previously represented Deccan Chargers, Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) before joining the PBKS set-up, Dhawan was playing his 218th game in the toughest T20 competition when he reached the unprecedented feat.

Dhawan First To Reach 900 Boundaries In IPL History

Dhawan boasts of 754 fours and 148 sixes, which takes his boundary tally to 902 boundaries in the IPL. No other batter in the league's 17-year-old existence has achieved the 900-mark with his fours and sixes combined.

The closest second to the mark is IPL's numero uno run-getter and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) legend Virat Kohli with his tally of 878 boundary strokes, including 643 fours and 235 maximums.

Dhawan is also the IPL's second-highest scorer with a whopping 6,639 runs made at an average of 35.31 and a strike-rate surpassing 127, including two centuries and 50 half-centuries.

The feat of 50 fifties made in the IPL marks the 37-year-old part of a rare bracket of cricketers, with only Kohli and Dhawan's former Sunrisers captain David Warner also producing 50 half-centuries in the premier domestic T20 competition.

Dhawan, however, would've been livid with himself to have missed out on a wonderful start after being dismissed on 22 off 16 deliveries in PBKS's run-chase against the Capitals.
