Shaheen Afridi cleaned up Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to tender India’s top-order toothless in their opening Asia Cup 2023 match against Pakistan. The speedster rattled both their stumps within his opening spell, as Team India slumped to 27-2 inside the first seven overs of the innings.

Remarkably, Afridi also managed to claim a huge record courtesy of his sublime opening spell against India.

Shaheen Afridi becomes first in the world to do this

Shaheen Afridi clipped the top of Rohit Sharma’s off stump to send Indian captain packing back to the pavilion for just 11. Three balls later into his opening spell, the pace maverick made Virat Kohli chop on to his own stumps to shatter the Indian top-order at 27-2.

Through his remarkable spell in Kandy, Afridi became the first bowler in the world to dismiss modern-day batting greats Sharma and Kohli both ‘bowled’ in the same innings.

Upon Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s dismissals, Afridi pace mate Haris Rauf also piled on the Indian pain as he curtailed comeback man Shreyas Iyer’s threatening innings at 14.

Both Sharma and Kohli took fields against Pakistan in India’s Asia Cup 2023 opener off the back of much expectations from their fans. The match also signals India’s final set of preparations in their race to the ODI World Cup 2023 at home later this year.

In the meantime, rains halted play soon after Shreyas Iyer’s dismissal at Kandy’s Pallekele International Stadium to leave game paused at 58-3 from 12.0 overs for a while.
