Centuries from Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed, coupled with sublime spells from Shaheen Afridi and Shadab Khan engineered a massive 238-run win for Pakistan in their opening Asia Cup 2023 match against Nepal.

Despite multiple individual brilliances, Mohammad Rizwan’s bizarre runout during the Pakistan innings became one of the talking points of the game. The incident occurred in the 24th over where Rizwan was seen taking a casual stroll before Nepal fielder Dipendra Singh’s direct throw brought an end to his innings.

To make matters worse, the cricketer even ducked for cover on his way to the other end in order to avoid contact with the ball making its way to the stumps.

Ravichandran Ashwin decodes Rizwan’s runout

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has given his take on Mohammad Rizwan’s runout against Nepal. Known for his keen observation of the game, Ashwin believes that Rizwan’s reluctance to wear a helmet at the time led to his runout.

Taking to X, the legendary spinner wrote:

“The height of the throw made it harder to evade for Rizwan but for someone who generally dives to make his ground all the time while running between the wickets, this is a rare instance of him ducking for cover and the only reason is that he isn’t wearing his helmet. He loves sweeping against spin and no helmet makes it even more bizarre.”

Regardless of the unfortunate runout, Pakistan made a perfect start to their Asia Cup 2023 campaign with a win over Nepal. They will now go up against arch-rivals India in their final Group A game of the competition. The match will be played on September 2 in Kandy.
