The South African cricket team further strengthened its grip over Pakistan by the end of Day 2 of the Cape Town Test. Ryan Rickelton mounted a record score after reaching his maiden double century, while senior fast bowler Kagiso Rabada piled on Pakistan’s misery towards the closing stages before stumps.

Here’s the timeline of how SA vs PAK panned out in Cape Town:

SA vs PAK Highlights: Rickelton Completes Double Ton, SA Reaches 429 By Lunch

Resuming his innings at 176 on Day 2, overnight centurion Ryan Rickelton notched up his maiden double ton within the opening hour of the morning session. The lanky opening batter lost David Bedingham to Mohammad Abbas earlier in the day before forming another 100-plus stand with wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne.

Verreynne himself raced to 74* by lunch, while Rickelton extended his score to 213* as the Proteas reached 429-5 after the opening session of play.

SA vs PAK Highlights: Verreynne Century, Jansen’s 54-Ball 62 Speeds Up Scoring Rate

Kyle Verreynne hauled his fourth Test century shortly after the lunch break, reaching the milestone figure from just 144 balls with nine boundaries and five belligerent sixes. However, a couple of deliveries after reaching the landmark, Verreynne was holed out by Aamer Jamal at deep square off Agha Salman (3-148) to end his 148-run defiance with Ryan Rickelton for the sixth wicket.

Rickelton went on to pile up more records, as he became only the eighth South African batter in history to make 250 in an innings, scoring 259 runs in all from 343 deliveries and glittering his marathon knock with 29 boundaries and three maximums. However, a miscue off Mir Hamza brought an end to his 10-hour stay at the crease at 557-7.

Marco Jansen at number eight piled on the momentum with a swift 62 from just 54 balls, while ace spinner Keshav Maharaj slapped a 35-ball 40 until both cricketers were dismissed by Hamza (2-127) and Khurram Shahzad (2-123) respectively.

Mohammad Abbas picked up his third wicket of the innings in the form of number 11 Kwena Maphaka to halt South Africa’s batting juggernaut at 615 in 141.3 overs.

SA vs PAK Highlights: Rabada, Jansen Strikes As Pakistan Lose Three Before Stumps

South African pacemen Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen made the new ball count by picking up three wickets combined within the first nine overs of the innings. Rabada got rid of Pakistan skipper Shan Masood for just two and had Saud Shakeel caught by David Bedingham for a six-ball duck.

Jansen knocked over Pakistan’s number three Kamran Ghulam for just 12 as the visitors reached 20-3 in 8.4 overs. Overcoming early jitters, experimental opener Babar Azam (31* off 77) and fellow senior man Mohammad Rizwan (9* off 28) survived the remaining passage of play to navigate Pakistan to 64-3 from 21 overs by stumps on Day 2.
