South Africa gained a handy lead over Pakistan at the halfway stage of the series-opening first Test match at Centurion. Young fast bowler Marco Jansen further elevated the Proteas with two key wickets before stumps on Day 2.
Here’s the timeline of how SA vs PAK panned out in Centurion:
SA vs PAK Highlights: Naseem Shah Leads Pakistan Fightback With Three Quick Wickets
South African opener Aiden Markram and fellow overnight batter Temba Bavuma stitched together a 70-run partnership until the latter tickled one behind towards Mohammad Rizwan off Aamer Jamal at 31. David Bedingham at number six also scored a valuable 30 in another valiant partnership with Markram to take the Proteas to a commanding 178-4 at one stage of the morning session.
However, a quick three-wicket burst from Naseem Shah in the space of his four overs tilted the momentum back in Pakistan’s favor. Markram, upon reaching 89*, also nicked one towards Rizwan albeit off Khurram Shahzad as the hosts slipped to 213-8, finding themselves just two runs ahead of Pakistan at the brink of getting bowled out.
SA vs PAK Highlights: Corbin Bosch Swells South African Lead With Frustrating 81*
Batting at number nine, South African debutant and fast bowler Corbin Bosch frustrated the Pakistanis by punching out 81* attacking runs from just 93 deliveries with 15 regal boundaries. Bosch’s batting defiance with his fellow tailenders swelled the South African lead up to 90 runs before Aamer Jamal (2-36) and Saim Ayub (1-3) mopped up the Proteas tail at 301 in 73.2 overs.
Remarkably, through his blazing 81*, Corbin Bosch became the first cricketer in South African Test history to take a four-wicket haul and register a fifty-plus score in the same match, doing so on his debut no less.
SA vs PAK Highlights: Pakistan Lose Three Before Overcoming Deficit By Stumps
Pakistan openers Saim Ayub and Shan Masood once again overcame South Africa’s initial new ball assault with an attacking 49-run partnership. However, in the 11th over of the innings, Ayub (28 off 36) had his stumps rattled to an absolute zinger from Kagiso Rabada.
Captain Masood also squandered away his hard-earned start at 28 by getting bounced out by Marco Jansen late on Day 2. With his tail up, Jansen delivered one more wicket for South Africa in the form of Kamran Ghulam before bad lights called for an early stumps.
Pakistan finished the day at 88-3 in 22 overs, with Babar Azam (16* off 34) and Saud Shakeel (8* off 8) batting at the crease as the visitors find themselves another two runs away from the hosts.
