Brian Bennett got to his maiden Test hundred with back-to-back sixes off Afghanistan fast bowler Naveed Zadran. Bennett’s whirlwind century helped hosts Zimbabwe mount 586 runs in their first innings of the series-opening first Test match at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

Zimbabwe amasses highest Test total

Young Zimbabwe batter Brian Bennett piled on Afghanistan’s misery on Day 2 of the first Test match in Bulawayo. Batting at number seven and arriving to the crease following the dismissal of centurion Sean Williams at 383-5 on the second morning, Bennett launched five boundaries and four sixes to race to his maiden Test century.

Scoring 110* runs in all from just 124 deliveries, Bennett’s blinder helped Zimbabwe mount 586 in their first innings off 135.2 overs to maintain an innings run rate of 4.33. Remarkably, the 21-year-old raced to his landmark figure with a huge six off Afghanistan fast bowler Naveed Zadran. Moreover, Bennett launched the visiting speedster for another six off the very next delivery.

Apart from Brian Bennett’s unbeaten 110, senior man Sean Williams listed his career-best score of 154 from just 174 balls while captain Craig Ervine also made 104 with 10 elegant boundaries in the middle order.

The occasion marked just the third instance in Zimbabwean Test history where three different batters racked up centuries in a single innings of a match. Moreover, Zimbabwe’s total of 586 also marked their highest ever in Test cricket, as records came tumbling down at the Queens Sports Club.

For Afghanistan, Rashid Khan’s replacement AM Ghazanfar picked up three wickets in the innings, while Zadran, Zahir Khan and Zia-ur-Rehman chipped in with two wickets each.

In response, the visitors lost opening batter Sediqullah Atal for just three in the second over of the innings at the hallway stage of Day 2.
