Team India, under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, consigned the visiting West Indies women’s team to a 3-0 defeat in the ODI series. In the third ODI as panned out at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara, Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma delivered the knockout punch to Hayley Matthews’ troops with an astonishing six-wicket haul and a run-chase masterclass with the bat.

Earlier during the West Indies tour, the ‘Women in Blue’ also clinched the three-match T20I series by a 2-1 margin. Despite attracting a good turnout throughout the series, the final match of the tour was succeeded by an empty press conference.

India’s ODI series win followed by shocking empty conference

An empty press conference in Vadodara after India’s third ODI win over West Indies sent shockwaves throughout the Indian cricketing fraternity. With no reporters present at the conference hall, several Indian fans speculated it to be a stern reality check for the state of women’s cricket in the country.

The popularity of women’s cricket in India has soared over the past few years. Following India’s runners-up campaign at the 2020 T20 World Cup, the inauguration of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) edition in 2023 further elevated the reputation of the women’s game among Indian audiences.

However, the lack of media turnout after India’s ODI series win over West Indies seems to have pegged back the popularity by a few steps amidst a hectic international calendar.

Nonetheless, in the third ODI match, Deepti Sharma bagged match-winning figures of 6-31 to skittle the West Indies out for just 162. India’s new ball pacer Renuka Singh Thakur also took four wickets in the innings, including that of three top-order batters.

Later in the Indian run-chase, Sharma scored an unbeaten 39* from 48 balls, while Richa Ghosh clobbered three sixes and a boundary to blaze her team to victory in just 28.2 overs.
