An Afghanistan Women’s team, comprising of Afghan women currently in refuge in Australia, is set to play a cricket match at the Junction Oval in Melbourne. In a join initiative by Cricket Australia and Cricket ACT, it was confirmed that the Afghan women’s refugee team will go up against a team to be combined by Cricket Without Borders Charity on January 30 next year.
Interestingly, Cricket Australia’s noble stand for women cricketers from Afghanistan occurred at a time when the Australian board is refusing to withdraw its negative stance over playing with the Afghanistan men’s team.
CA to host AFG women after canceling 3 series with men
Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley has confirmed that an Afghanistan women’s team will be playing an exhibition cricket match in Melbourne. While speaking with the Sydney Morning Herald, he said that the match commemorates the efforts provided for supporting the members of the Afghanistan women’s team who have relocated to Australia amidst troubled times back home.
Interestingly, Cricket Australia has cancelled three bilateral series with Afghanistan men ever since the Taliban took over the war-torn Asian country. As of now, Australia is scheduled to host Afghanistan in a men’s Test and three T20Is in mid-2026 as per the ICC’s FTP. However, the series is unlikely to go ahead, if CA’s past relations with the ACB are any indication.
The match between the Afghanistan women’s team and the team to be formed by Cricket Without Borders Charity on January 30 will be played mere hours prior to the launch of the women’s Ashes Test match between Australia and England at the MCG on the same day.
Firooza Amiri, one of the Afghanistan women’s cricketers, previously said that the Afghanistan women’s players in Australia are losing hope of playing cricket again, and some cricketers have even considered taking up other sports off late.
