Mitchell Marsh and Tim David battered South Africa before Marcus Stoinis and debutant Tanveer Sangha completed demolition job in Kingsmead to take Australia 1-0 up in the T20I series.

Mitchell Marsh blasts 92* in record Australian total

Australian batters Matthew Short and Travis Head made their way into the middle after they were put into bat first by South African captain Aiden Markram.

While the openers became two of four cheap Australian casualties in the first seven overs alongside Josh Inglis and Marcus Stoinis, an unfazed Mitchell Marsh kept his aggressive intent intact throughout top-order mayhem.

The dynamic all-rounder found an ideal ally in Tim David at 77-4, as the two added nearly 100 runs together off the subsequent 50 balls. While Marsh hammered his T20I career-best with a 49-ball 92*, David scorched the South African pacers through his 28-ball 64.

One of the four debutants in the side, Aaron Hardie also scored a handy 14-ball 23 in the death to take the Australia to 226-6, their record T20I total against South Africa.

Among the hosts’ bowlers, Lizaad Williams claimed three wickets in the high-scoring innings, while Gerald Coetzee somehow sneaked in a maiden in his four-over spell of 1-40.

Stoinis and debutants reap benefits of scoreboard pressure

South African opener Reeza Hendricks went berserk at the top before toning it down a bit owing to careless approach from his partners at the other end. Fellow opening batsman Temba Bavuma was the first to depart in the run-chase after he was cleaned up by Marcus Stoinis within the opening over.

Captain Aiden Markram, debutant Dewald Brewis and wicketkeeper Tristan Stubbs all fell to single-digit scores at the hands of Australian spinner Tanveer Sangha in his maiden T20I cap. The youngster also rattled Marco Jansen’s stumps to finish with 4-31 from four overs.

Fellow Australian debutant Spencer Johnson also found some time to shine as he reaped the benefits of scoreboard pressure to snap Hendrick’s defiant innings at 56. The speedster returned to clean up number 11 Tabraiz Shamsi to finish off the proceedings.

Meanwhile, charismatic all-rounder Stoinis kept things tight from his end and added two more victims to his tally to claim 3-18 from his three overs.

The three bowlers together completed the demolition job to script a 111-run win for Australia, their biggest T20I victory margin over prominent white-ball rivals South Africa.

The two titans will now collide on September 1 at the same venue for the second T20I of their three-match series.
