Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has rued the absence of multiple senior members of the side from their Asia Cup 2023 squad. A day prior to Bangladesh’s imminent Asia Cup 2023 opening clash against tournament co-hosts Sri Lanka, the legendary all-rounder admitted that their absence will be a big miss for the team.

However, Shakib also claimed that their unavailability will hand other members of the side an opportunity to perform ahead of the 2023 World Cup in India.

Notably, senior pros like Litton Das, Tamim Iqbal and Ebadot Hossain were all ruled out of the Bangladesh Asia Cup 2023 squad owing to different reasons. While opening batter Das failed to recover in time from his viral fever, Iqbal and Hosain are currently working towards attaining full recovery from their respective injuries.

Shakib Al Hasan sees silver lining in injury absence

During a pre-match press conference, Shakib Al Hasan lamented absence of senior members like Litton Das from team’s Asia Cup 2023 squad. The veteran all-rounder praised the dynamic opening batter for his vital contributions to team’s success in the past five years. He said:

“Of course, it is a big miss. If you talk about Liton Das, he has been part of the team for the last four or five years, and he was doing consistently well for Bangladesh.”

However, Shakib pinned his hope on younger members of the side to excel at the continental event. The legendary cricketer singled out young Towhid Hridoy for his recent form in LPL 2023 season, and made a bold prediction about his international future.

“But having said that this will give an opportunity to someone else and I hope they make full use of this opportunity. As far as Towhid is concerned he is really playing well for us this year. He has done well in the recent LPL 2023 and that should give him a lot of confidence going into the Asia Cup. He is going to play for Bangladesh for a long time.”

Bangladesh will go up against Sri Lanka in their opening match of the 2023 Asia Cup. The match, scheduled to be played on August 31, will be hosted by Kandy’s Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
