In a massive setback for Australia, star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against South Africa. Maxwell sustained a left ankle injury during Australia's first training session in Durban ahead of the first T20I on August 30.

Australia have roped in swashbuckling keeper-batter Matthew Wade as Maxwell's replacement for the three-match T20I series. Wade represented London Spirit in the recently concluded Men's Hundred competition, scoring 117 runs.

In a statement, Australian selector Tony Dodemaide explained that the board is following a precautional approach with Maxwell, given his importance in the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2023.

'We will monitor Glenn's recovery'- Tony Dodemaide

"We are taking a precautionary approach, given Glenn was heading home next week in any case. We will monitor Glenn's recovery with a view to him being available for the three-match ODI series in India in advance of the World Cup."

Maxwell was already scheduled to fly back to Australia after the conclusion of the T20I series for the birth of his first child.

All-rounder Mitchell Marsh will lead a young T20I side, with the likes of Travis Head, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, Inglis, and Spencer Johnson in the squad.

This is the second major setback for Australia, with Steven Smith and Mitchell Starc being already ruled out for the tour.
