Irfan Pathan took a hilarious dig at Pakistan fans following their team’s rain-affected no-result against India at the Asia Cup 2023.
The two nations went up against each other on September 2 in Kandy’s Pallekele Stadium, where rains constantly interrupted the Indian innings before completely preventing the launch of Pakistan’s run-chase. Both teams walked away with a point each, and the result also enabled the ‘Men in Green’ to storm into the Super Four stage of the tournament.
Irfan Pathan believes rains saved Pakistan
India’s star-studded top-order, featuring the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, received multiple jolts at the hands of Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf upfront as they were reduced to 66-4 inside the first 15 overs of the match. After that, Ishan Kishan and vice-captain Hardik Pandya lifted the Indian innings with a belligerent counterattacking 138-run stand, which took the team past the 200-run mark.
Kishan and Pandya slammed sparkling 80s before Jasprit Bumrah’s handy runs in the death stretched the Indian total to 266.
Apparently, former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan believes the total was more than enough for the ‘Men in Blue’ to prevail in the contest. After the match was officially called off due to rain, the cricketer-turned-commentator took to X (formerly Twitter) and took a hilarious dig at Pakistan fans.
Irfan Pathan wrote:
“Bahot saare Padosiyon ke TV bach gaye aaj” (TV sets survived in our neighbouring country today)
The former all-rounder also criticised the Pakistan team for letting Team India walk away with a competitive total despite having them completely on the mat at one stage. The legendary cricketer stated that if the roles were reversed, the Indian team would have kept the pressure on Pakistan with their four fast bowlers if the latter were placed at 66-4.
Regardless of the result, the two Asian titans will likely collide again in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 during the Super Four stage.
However, Rohit Sharma and co. need to defeat Nepal in their final Group A game in Kandy on September 4 to qualify for the next round.
