South African captain Temba Bavuma batted with grit and determination to pump out an unbeaten century against Australia in Bloemfontein. The cricketer carried his bat throughout the innings to lift his side to 222.

Bavuma batted with the tail, and accounted for more than half of his team’s total with his undefeated 114. No other top-order batter managed to outscore Aiden Markram’s mere 19, while Marco Jansen at number seven extended much assistance to his skipper with a crafty 32 in their 57-run stand.

Hosts South Africa, fresh from their 0-3 drubbing to Australia in the T20Is, took field in Bloemfontein on September 7 to launch their five-match ODI series against the visitors.

Managing just 33 off their first 12 overs, South Africa had already lost opener Quinton de Kock and number three Rassie van der Dussen at this stage. Captain Temba Bavuma, however, remained defiant at his end of the crease and kept piling up crucial runs without forming any notable partnership, sans his 57-run stand with Marco Jansen.

Bavuma eventually raced to his 100, his fifth in ODIs, by dispatching Adam Zampa with a six and a four in the 48th over of the innings. The cricketer clubbed three more elegant boundaries off Josh Hazlewood in the penultimate over before his tail-end partner Lungi Ngidi perished to bring an end to the South African innings at 222.

Overall, the 33-year-old finished at 114 off 142 balls in an innings laced with 14 boundaries and a six.

The ongoing series marks South Africa’s final set of fixtures prior to the 2023 ODI World Cup in India later this year.
