A perfect blend of old-school and modern-age, One-Day International (ODI) has evolved over the years from multi-day to single-day edition, to 60-overs, and finally 50-overs cricket. Since 1971, a total of 9313 ODIs have been played where as many as 28 nations have battled to gain supremacy over each other.

The introduction of T20 cricket, have elevated ODI cricket as well, where batters have managed to dismantle bowlers with the use of skills, and brute strength. In the past decade, teams have managed to breach the 400-run mark constantly, which once was a sacred number.

A total of 23 times have teams registered scores above 400, which with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 happening in India, could probably go past 500 as well. However, only seven countries have recorded 400+ runs in ODI cricket.

In this article, we list the Top 5 nations, which have crossed the 400 mark the most times.

India (6)

India first crossed 400 runs in an ODI in 2007 against Barmuda, where Virender Sehwag struck 114. Since then, India has made five more 400-plus totals, with the most recent coming in 2022.

Led by Ishan Kishan's double-century, India scored 409 for 8 against Bangladesh at Chattogram.  The nation's highest ODI is 418 for five, which came against West Indies in 2011, where Sehwag recorded a double ton.

Fun Fact: Four Indian batter have scored double centuries, in the six times that Team India went above 400 runs.

South Africa (6)

Along with India, South Africa have also managed to hit 400+ runs six times, including one of the most celebrated ODIs against Australia in 2006. With an influx of aggressive batters and new-found intent, South Africa became the first team to chase down 400+ runs, chasing a record 435 versus Australia.

South Africa's most recent 400+ score came off in India in 2015, where both Faf du Plessis, AB de Villiers, and Quinton de Kock scored 133, 119 and 109, respectively.

England (5)

Current World Cup title holders, England have surpassed 400 runs five times in their rich-cricketing history and holds the record of scoring the top-three highest ODI scores in international cricket.

After a change in mindset and style following the World Cup debacle, Eoin Morgan-led England struck 400+ runs for the first time in 2015 against New Zealand. The most recent 400-plus score came against the Netherlands, where Phil Salt, Dawid Malan, and Jos Buttler scored hundreds apiece and helped England reach 498 for 4, missing the never-breached 500 mark by two runs.

Australia (2)

In an era where Australia could do nothing wrong, the team became the first nation to cross the 400-run margin in 2006 in the now memorable ODI against South Africa. Despite having all the batting riches in the world, five-time World Cup winners could only breach the 400-run mark one more time in 2015 during the ICC World Cup Down Under.

A belligerent 178 from David Warner and power-hitting from Steven Smith and Glenn Maxwell helped Australia score 417 against Afghanistan. Overall, Australia have managed 400+ runs in ODIs just twice.

Sri Lanka (2)

Sri Lanka rounded off the top 5 list, having scored 400+ runs two times much like Australia.  The Lankan Lions scored 443 runs against the Netherlands in 2006, where Sanath Jayasuriya and Tillakaratne Dilshan scored 157 and an unbeaten 117, respectively. This ODI record lasted for 10 years before England scored 444 against Pakistan in 2016.

In a high-scoring encounter, chasing India's 415, Sri Lanka managed to stockpile 411 runs, failing three runs shy of a memorable chase. Dilshan shone here, too, scoring 160. Sri Lanka's highest ODI total since 2009 has been 377.
