Shubman Gill continues to dominate in the ongoing Test series against England, as the champion batter notched up yet another century on this tour. This was his fourth ton of the series, and he became the Indian captain with the most centuries in an away series as captain. His exploits ensured that India were in the hunt for a draw.
He came out to bat when India had lost two wickets without putting up a single run on the board, and when the pressure was high, Gill responded with a majestic hundred to push India's quest for a miraculous escape in Manchester. With this ton, he equalled Rohit Sharma in a massive feat.
Gill aims to surpass Rohit in century feat
With the century on Sunday, Gill joined Rohit as the Indian batter with the most Test hundreds in WTC history. Both the champion batters have nine centuries under their belt, but Gill achieved the feat in 67 innings, while Rohit did it in 69 innings.
In this series alone, Gill has slammed 4 centuries, which in itself is a massive feat, considering the fact that he had a dismal tour of Australia. If the India captain scores one more hundred in the 5th Test at Oval, he will surpass Rohit, and will have the most tons for India in WTC.
Most hundreds by an Indian in WTC
Batters | Hundreds |
Shubman Gill | 9* |
Rohit Sharma | 9 |
Rishabh Pant | 6 |
Yashasvi Jaiswal | 5 |
Virat Kohli | 5 |
Gill sits at the top, as he has the same number of centuries as Rohit, but he has achieved the feat in fewer games. The India captain has the chance to break the record in the next Test at the Oval.
Superstar Rishabh Pant is the next closest to Gill, as the maverick batter has 6 Test tons in WTC, with two of them coming in the first Test at Headingley. Jaiswal, who just started his Test career, two years ago, already has five Test hundreds, with one coming in the ongoing series.
