On Day 5 of the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, Indian captain Shubman Gill rose to the occasion under intense pressure. India were in deep trouble at 0 for 2 when Gill walked in to bat. Not only was he carrying the weight of the team as a batter, but also the responsibilities of leadership. However, he stood tall like a true warrior and delivered exactly when the team needed him the most.

By the end of Day 4, Gill was unbeaten on 78, having already played a vital role in rebuilding India’s innings alongside KL Rahul. As Day 5 began, Gill picked up right where he left off, calm and in control. He eventually reached his ninth hundred with a graceful shot through point. 

While the innings itself was a big deal, what made it even more special was the number of records Gill broke along the way. First and foremost, he became the first-ever player to score four centuries in his debut Test series as captain, something that even greats like Virat Kohli never managed.

Moreover, he now holds the record for most centuries by an India captain in a Test series played away from home. He surpassed big names like Kohli, Tendulkar, and Dravid in that list.

Alongside that, Gill also matched Sunil Gavaskar’s long-standing record of most centuries in a single Test series by an Indian captain and also as a captain, four centuries.

As the game continued, another huge milestone came into focus. With 722 runs in the series so far, Gill now holds the record for most runs scored by a captain in a Test series played in SENA countries, beating legends like Garry Sobers and Graeme Smith.

Not only that, he also climbed to third place in terms of most runs scored by any player in a Test series between India and England in England, behind only Graham Gooch and Joe Root. 

As of now, India still trail England by 88 runs, and the team is holding on with six wickets remaining. After KL Rahul’s 90 and Gill’s 103 off 238 balls, the responsibility now lies with Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja, who are currently at the crease.

With one day left and the odds stacked against them, India will most likely aim for a draw, as a win looks highly unlikely at this stage. Meanwhile, England will look to take the remaining wickets quickly and avoid letting India take a lead.
