Indian skipper Rohit Sharma built a remarkable 190* run partnership with Rinku Singh for the fifth wicket against Afghanistan in Bengaluru to script a historic record in India's T20I history.

Rohit Sharma, coming off two ducks in this T20I series against Afghanistan, felt the initial jitters before eventually getting off the mark. However, an absolute horror show unfolded at the other end as India lost as many as four wickets inside the power play with only 22 runs on the board.

However, the Indian skipper didn't let the pressure get to him and changed his approach to rebuild India's innings from scratch. Meanwhile, finisher Rinku Singh supported his captain bravely from the other end and held onto his wicket.

By the end of the powerplay, Rohit Sharma was set and felt confident enough to shift gears. He played audacious shots in the middle to snatch back the momentum to his side. At the other end, Rinku Singh took a cue from Sharma and began hitting sixes like a child's play.

In the final five overs, Sharma and Singh chose to unleash carnage as they put up a 100-run record partnership to guide India to a mammoth total of 212 runs. While Sharma slammed a phenomenal hundred, Rinku also hit 69 runs off 39 balls.

Highest partnership for any wicket for India in T20Is

  • Rohit Sharma - Rinku Singh : 190* runs vs Afg in Bengaluru 2024
  • Sanju Samson - Deepak Hooda : 176 runs vs Ire in Dublin 2022
  • Rohit Sharma - KL Rahul : 165 runs v SL in Indore 2017
  •  Yashasvi Jaiswal - Shubman Gill : 165 runs vs WI in Lauderhill 2023

The stand reduced India from a deep mess. While Rohit Sharma used his extensive experience, a young Rinku Singh showcased elite bravery and fearlessness to lend much-needed support to his captain.

With that, India are still in the hunt to secure a series sweep against Afghanistan in the first-ever T20 bilateral series held between the two sides.
