Indian captain Rohit Sharma slapped a 48-run offence against Bangladesh in their World Cup 2023 shootout in Pune. The dashing opener shared 88 runs with partner Shubman Gill, until he was done in by a short ball from Hasan Mahmud.

Through the course of his knock, Sharma became the first batter to complete 250 individual runs in the ongoing 2023 World Cup. The cricketer achieved the feat despite sustaining a duck in his side’s opening contest against Australia in Chennai a couple of weeks ago.

World Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma climbs to the top

Rohit Sharma punched out a scintillating 40-ball 48 against Bangladesh to provide his side a flourishing start at the top. The batting legend smoked two sixes and seven boundaries in his innings, until his dismissal curtailed his 88-run partnership with Shubman Gill.

Notably, Sharma also went past New Zealand opener Devon Conway to become the leading run-scorer of the ongoing 2023 World Cup. The right-hander’s tournament tally currently stands at 265 runs from four innings at an average of 66.25.

Conway, on the other hand, is placed at 249 runs and he is closely followed by Pakistan batting veteran Mohammad Rizwan with 248 runs to his name. Here is a look at the top five list of highest run-scorers of the 2023 World Cup:

Earlier in the tournament, Rohit Sharma lit up Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium with his match-winning 131 against Afghanistan. He followed up his effort with another 86 against arch-rivals Pakistan in front of a packed Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

India’s next match against New Zealand will provide both, Sharma and Conway, an opportunity to race to the top on the World Cup 2023 run-scoring charts.
