The Indian duo Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have paired up to notch up the third-highest powerplay score for India against South Africa in ODIs on November 30, 2025. In the ongoing first ODI against the Proteas, Kohli and Rohit played a fiery knock and partnered together to etch the record.

Though Yashasvi Jaiswal, who opened with Rohit, also had notable contributions, he was dismissed by Nandre Burger for just 18 runs.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli look in fine touch

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who are back in action on Indian soil after February 2025, look in rhythm as India is currently batting against the visitors after losing the toss. Both the duo look in fine touch as, at the time of writing, Kohli is nearing his 50 while Rohit Sharma is in his 30s.

Both striking at a strike rate of 100+, are giving India a solid foundation at the top as India stands at 97-1 at the end of 13 overs. As India nears 100, the 80 runs in powerplay ranks only third behind 91/1 and 87/0 in powerplays back in 2023 and 2011 respectively.

Highest Powerplay Scores for India vs South Africa in ODIs:

  • 91/1, Eden Gardens, 2023
  • 87/0, Nagpur, 2011
  • 80/1, Ranchi, 2025*
  • 63/1, Centurion, 2018
  • 61/1, Gqeberha, 2018

India adds to the list of highest powerplay scores in Ranchi in ODIs

Notably, this powerplay score is also the highest powerplay score in Ranchi in the ODI format. The earlier score saw New Zealand score 80 runs against India back in 2016, while another one saw 55 runs piled up by India against South Africa back in 2022.

Highest Powerplay Scores in Ranchi in ODIs:

  • 80/0 by New Zealand vs India, 2016
  • 80/1 by India vs South Africa, 2025*
  • 55/2 by India vs South Africa, 2022

The massive score from India rides on the back of proteas bowlers. Except for Nandre Burger, all the other South African bowlers went wicketless, with Marco Jansen, the star performer in the Test series against India, being the most expensive with 30 runs from 4 overs.
