India's toss losing streak continues [Source: @cricbuzz/x.com]
How difficult is it to win a toss in a cricket match? Well, Team India is finding the job tough as the Men in Blue have lost yet another toss in the first ODI of the series against South Africa. Ironically, this was the 19th consecutive time the team has lost in ODIs, a streak that started from the 2023 World Cup final.
Since the finals of the World Cup, India has set foot in ODI games 19 times, and in all these matches, luck has not been with the team, as the unfortunate streak continues. Interestingly, the probability of this happening is 1 in 524,288, or 0.00019%, as India is yet to break the toss jinx that began two years ago.
They have surpassed the previous record of 11 held by the Netherlands between March 2011 and August 2013.
Most tosses lost across formats since 2024
India accompanies West Indies and Bangladesh in an unfortunate list as the Indian side has become the side with the second-most tosses lost since 2024. While the West Indies have lost 54 coin flips, India is not far behind with 51, and Bangladesh sits at third spot with 45.
Perhaps, a coin flip is the only thing that is not in control of the players and one can only assume that luck has not been kind towards the Men in Blue in 50-overs format.
What happened in IND Vs SA 1st ODI toss?
As the streak continued, South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl first on a Ranchi wicket that gets better as the game progresses, especially with the dew factor.
For the Proteas, Temba Bavuma and Keshav Maharaj have been rested, while Rishabh Pant misses out for India. Moreover, Ruturaj Gaikwad, who performed well in the domestic circuit is slated to bat at number 4.
