Cricket Ireland in talks with BCCI [Source: @ICC/X.com]
Cricket Ireland (CI) is in discussions with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about the possibility of hosting the Indian men’s team for a limited-overs series in 2026. Notably, India are already set to play England from July 1-19 next year, with five T20Is and three ODIs lined up.
Ireland Hopeful Of Hosting India in 2026
According to ESPNcricinfo, CI hopes to arrange a short series against India just before that. If it happens, it would be India’s fourth visit to Ireland, after tours in 2018, 2022, and 2023, all of which drew big crowds in Malahide.
Currently, Ireland are playing a T20I series against England, though the second game was washed out by rain. Before the series, Ireland captain Paul Stirling had said his team felt “underprepared” because of too few matches.
After the washout, CI chairman Brian MacNeice met with players and staff to address their concerns. MacNeice admitted that the amount of cricket Ireland will play in 2025 is not enough to get players ready for international tournaments.
“I opened the meeting by saying, as far as I’m concerned, the quantum of cricket that we’re playing in ’25 isn’t good enough to prepare you guys to play international cricket and to be competitive at ICC tournaments," MacNeice said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. “I’m not hiding from that," he added.
Ireland’s struggle to secure more matches mainly comes down to money: turning local club grounds into international venues is expensive, and their TV broadcast deals don’t bring in much revenue. Still, MacNeice said the players understand the challenges.
As per the ICC’s Future Tours Programme, Ireland will host New Zealand (one Test), Bangladesh (three ODIs and three T20Is), and Afghanistan (one Test, three ODIs and three T20Is) in summer 2025.
