Tim David showcased sublime form in the first T20I against South Africa as he bludgeoned his way through to an outrageous half-century at Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin. Coming at number five, David steadied the ship for Australia with a magnificent knock.

David Saves Australia From Humiliation With Fine Fifty

After winning the toss, South Africa captain Aiden Markram opted to bowl first in order to make the most of the conditions in Darwin. Although the track seemed like a belter, the Australian batters threw their wickets with poor shot selection, leaving their team reeling at 75 for six.

However, Tim David played a superb knock, ensuring Australia breached the 130-run mark in the encounter. He was promoted over the likes of Mitchell Owen and Glenn Maxwell, a move that worked wonders for the home side.

David, who recently smashed a blistering century against West Indies, dominated the Proteas bowlers. He extended his purple patch in T20 cricket, eventually completing a breezy half-century.

This was David's second fifty against South Africa as he became the first-ever Australian player to score two T20I half-centuries versus the rainbow nation while batting at number five or below.

His partnership with left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis powered Australia to a respectable score despite an early batting collapse. Apart from Tim David, none of the Australian batters showed the grit to counter the Proteas bowlers in the series opener.

While captain Mitchell Marsh departed for 13 runs, Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Owen registered single-digit scores. Josh Inglis couldn't open his account, with Dwarshuis chipping in with a crucial 17-run cameo.

Amid the chaos, Tim David's onslaught has kept Australia going in the match. As of writing, the hosts were 163 for seven, with David and Nathan Ellis batting on 83* and 1*, respectively.
