In a significant development, India's star batter Shubman Gill is all set to mark his return to the T20I set-up with the Asia Cup 2025, and will be named India's vice-captain in the upcoming continental cup. The 25-year-old will serve as Suryakumar Yadav's deputy in the eight-team tournament that starts on September 9.

Gill To Be SKY's Deputy

According to a report from Subhayan Chakraborty of RevSportz, Gill, who last played a T20I match in July 2024, will be a part of the Asia Cup as India's vice-captain. Notably, the 25-year-old has been rewarded for his brilliant IPL season, where he scored 650 runs in 15 innings, averaging 50.

Further, the BCCI has also awarded Gill with leadership duties, as he did brilliantly as India's Test captain in his debut series as a leader in England, where India drew the series 2-2.

Shubman Gill Expected To Succeed Rohit Sharma Soon

Not only Asia Cup's vice-captaincy, but the BCCI has reportedly bigger things planned for Gill, as the report also added that Gill will soon be appointed as India's ODI captain, succeeding Rohit Sharma, who is only active in the fifty-over format.

The report did not mention whether the BCCI plans to hand over the leadership duties soon or in the coming years, but what can be confirmed is that Gill is next in line to replace Rohit as India's ODI captain. Earlier, Hardik Pandya and Shreyas Iyer's name also popped up.

BCCI Ask Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli To Retire

The report that Gill will soon be handed ODI captaincy has come at a time when the BCCI has asked the veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy in December or retire after Australia ODIs, as their place in the 2027 ODI World Cup is not certain at the moment.
