A lot was expected of Travis Head in the first T20I of the series against South Africa, but the Australian opener had an average outing as the southpaw was dismissed for a painstaking 7-ball 2. For his short stay at the crease, the Aussie opener looked scratchy, and Rabada delivered the killer blow to send him back.

Travis Head fails to deliver on T20I comeback

The batter missed the T20Is against the West Indies last month, as he wanted to keep himself fit for the South Africa home series, but the opener had a miserable start. Rabada bowled a length ball outside the off as Travis Head slashed hard, but played it through the outer half of the bat.

Kwena Maphaka was stationed at the short-third man region, and he took a sharp catch just inches above the ground to send the dangerous batter packing for a low score. The decision was sent to the tv umpire for a fair catch, and it was eventually concluded that Maphaka's fingers were underneath the ball, as the batter had to walk back.

Australia to back Head as opener for T20 World Cup

Head had a rare failure against the Proteas attack, and he will continue to open the innings for Australia. As per Cricket Australia, the maverick batter is set to open alongside Mitchell Marsh in the T20 World Cup.

The T20 World Cup in 2026 will be played in India, and the Australian side wants two aggressive players to open the innings, and maximise the powerplay situation. Plus, the left-right combination could cause trouble for the opponent in the World Cup. Prior to the first T20I, Head had accumulated 1093 runs in 38 T20Is, at an astonishing strike rate of 160.49.
