A rare and eye-catching moment lit up the Big Bash League on Sunday as Melbourne Renegades wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan produced an extraordinary boundary save against the Hobart Hurricanes. Usually limited to the inner ring, Rizwan’s athletic effort beyond the ropes delivered a sight rarely seen in professional cricket.
Rizwan’s remarkable boundary save vs the Hurricanes
The incident occurred early in the Hurricanes’ chase of 146, on the second delivery of the second over bowled by Gurinder Sandhu. Facing Sandhu, Nikhil Chaudhary dropped to one knee and attempted a lap sweep. The shot took a thick top edge and went high towards the right of deep square leg.
Jake Fraser-McGurk, stationed near the boundary, reacted sharply and put in a full-length slide, managing to get his fingertips to the ball and slow it down. However, the danger was far from over as the ball continued to roll towards the boundary rope for four.
Just then, from absolute nowhere, Rizwan sprinted across from behind the stumps, covering significant ground before launching himself into a desperate dive. Sliding along the turf and through the boundary rope, the Pakistan international managed to flick the ball back into play just in time.
The Hurricanes had to settle for three runs instead of a boundary as the umpire confirmed the save, leaving players and spectators stunned at that moment. Wicket-keepers saving boundaries is a rarity in cricket, making Rizwan’s effort all the more remarkable.
The Big Bash League is famous for such thrilling moments. Although Rizwan had earlier failed with the bat, this incident quickly went viral, with fans applauding his alertness and dedication as he smoothly shifted from wicketkeeper to outfield fielder, to save a boundary.
