England trail by 214 runs vs Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, having opted to bat first, faced a challenging start. The team was quickly reduced to 6/3 in the seventh over. Kusal Mendis (24) and Dinesh Chandimal (17) briefly steadied the innings before being dismissed by two exceptional deliveries. 

At 113/7, Sri Lanka seemed in deep trouble until captain Dhananjaya de Silva and debutant Milan Rathnayake orchestrated a recovery.

De Silva, showcasing a masterful innings, scored 74 runs, while Rathnayake contributed 72. Their partnership brought Sri Lanka to a respectable total of 236 before they were all out in 74 overs. 

England’s bowlers, Chris Woakes and Shoaib Bashir, each claimed three wickets, but Sri Lanka’s lower order added significant runs. 

England began their reply, but the rain delay halted their progress after just four overs, leaving them at 22/0 with Ben Duckett and Daniel Lawrence at the crease.
