In a surprising turn of events, play on Day 3 of the Headingley Test stopped at 10:30 PM IST, and stumps were taken early. Notably, a drizzle began during Shoaib Bashir’s over, and the umpire did not allow the England spinner to complete his over, calling the players off the field with one ball remaining in the 24th over.

Stumps Taken Early On Day 3

The umpire removed the bails and called for stumps, surprising fans who expected play to be extended, as had happened on Day 2. For the uninitiated, stumps were taken at 11:04 PM IST on Day 1, while rain interrupted the match on Day 2, and the umpires extended the sessions until 11:43 pm IST.

Heavy rain started falling at Headingley after the conclusion of the first session, which prompted the organisers to extend play until 11:43 PM IST on Day 2. However, this did not happen on Day 3.

Why Was Stumps Taken Early On Day 3

It is worth noting that, according to the original session timings, play was indeed scheduled to end at 10:30 PM IST.

Session Timings:

Session 1: 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM IST

Session 2: 6:10 PM – 8:10 PM IST

Session 3: 8:30 PM – 10:30 PM IST

Further, commentators remarked that stumps would be taken at 10:30 PM IST, and play could only be extended until 11:00 PM IST if rain had stopped before 10:30 PM IST (which is 6:00 PM local time). However, the umpire called off play at 10:34 PM IST, which is why play was not extended.

For Day 4, the match will start at 3:30 pm and the session will go on till 10:30 pm IST. In case of rain, the match can be extended half an hour till 11:00 pm IST.
