Saim Ayub registers unwanted record in Asia Cup 2025 [Source: @dhillow_/X.com]
Saim Ayub, the promising young opener of Pakistan, registered the lowest runs ever hit by a top-order batter in the Men's T20 Asia Cup. Ayub hit rock bottom after yet another cheap dismissal against India in the final.
Ayub, once recognised as Pakistan's generational talent, is having one of the worst seasons in the Asia Cup 2025. While he was expected to regain form in the high-stakes final against arch-rival, Ayub failed to take responsibility.
Saim Ayub scripts unwanted Asia Cup 2025 record
In the Asia Cup 2025 final against India, Saim Ayub, walking to bat at no.3, was dismissed cheaply on 14 off 11 by Kuldeep Yadav. It wasn't an unplayable delivery as Kuldeep bowled one just short of a good length, turning it away slightly.
Ayub, looking to free his arms again, failed to keep the cut down and ended up slicing it towards the backward point. Waiting there was Jasprit Bumrah, who judged the ball perfectly and stooped low to complete a neat catch.
Least runs scored in Men's T20 Asia Cup by a top 3 batter
Players | Runs | Innings | Year |
Saim Ayub | 37 | 7 | 2025 |
Tanzid Hasan | 67 | 5 | 2025 |
Babar Azam | 68 | 6 | 2022 |
With that, Saim Ayub ends the Men's T20 Asia Cup 2025 edition with 37 runs in 7 innings, which is the lowest ever registered by a top 3 batter in the tournament history.
For perspective, the next two names on this unwanted list include Bangladesh's Tanzid Hasan (67 runs in 5 innings) and Pakistan skipper Babar Azam (68 runs in 6 innings). Yet, Saim's tally stands out as the lowest, amplifying the disappointment.
Notably, out of the seven innings, Saim Ayub was dismissed on duck four times. In the rest of the 3 innings, the batter scored 21, 2 and 14. He started the Asia Cup 2025 as an opener but was dropped down the order to shed off the pressure to dominate the powerplay off his shoulders.
However, the change did nothing as Ayub continued to go downhill. In 2025 so far, Saim Ayub has scored 355 runs in 21 innings with 16.90 average and 129.09 strike rate.
That being said, following Ayub's dismissal, Pakistan collapsed completely. They lost Mohammad Haris, Salman Agha and Hussain Talat on 0, 8 and 1, respectively. At 17 overs, Pakistan has 134 runs on the board at the loss of 8 wickets.
